The Game Fish Club of South Australia won the 1990 HIBT with this 592 pound Pacific Blue Marlin aboard the Sea Strike. The marlin was caught on 50 pound test. The angler was 80 year old Bill Combs.  Jono Johnson, another member of this fishing team, lost his thumb during the gaffing of this monster. Jono got his thumb caught in the gaff rope, and the limb was severed cleanly and lost at sea.  Jono stated later at the HIBT rewards banquet that "A little piece of me will always be Kona".
Big game fishing is exhilarating, but can also be dangerous.  Captain Dale can boast that this has been the only serious injury to happen on his boat in the many years that he has been charter fishing.
